Herceg Novi is a seaside town in Montenegro, situated at the entrance of the Bay of Kotor and at the base of Mount Orjen. It serves as the administrative hub of the Herceg Novi Municipality. From 1420 to 1797, when it was part of the Albania Veneta of the Republic of Venice, Herceg Novi was known as Castelnuovo. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • The old town of Herceg Novi. It is situated on a relatively steep hill that descends all the way to the sea. Both Orthodox and Catholic churches are present and are definitely worth a visit. • The Kanli Kula fortress, which overlooks the old town, also serves as an open-air theater. It is primarily worth visiting for the magnificent views of the town and the Bay of Kotor (entrance fee as of August 2012: 1 euro) • The Spanjola fortress, located further up the mountain (170 meters above sea level), dates back to the 16th century. To reach it, take a small street that ascends from the Kanli Kula fortress. • The Savina monastery, located approximately 2 km east of the city center, houses three beautiful Orthodox churches and offers stunning views of the bay.
